Deal with what has happened

Thinking about something over and over again reinforces the memory and increases the impact it has on you.

Distract yourself

When you think about something negative or unwanted again, think about something else on purpose.

Push it out of your head. Occupy your brain elsewhere. The less you think about something the more likely that the brain will dedicate its memory to something else.

If you are trying to deal with a break-up, HIV, an accident…distract yourself until you feel calm enough to address the issues that has come up.

No one makes good decisions when stressed and overwhelmed. You are allowed to take your time.

Talk to someone

Find someone you can trust and respect to talk about the situation and to get some perspectives.

Counselling services are often an excellent way to think about the situation objectively or try the strategies below.
